Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre
Since 1972, five universities have run a marine research station in the old cable buildings — students, scientists, and three kilometres of waterfront.
The cable buildings' second life
When the telegraph went quiet in 1959, the station sat waiting. In 1972 five western Canadian universities — Victoria, British Columbia, Simon Fraser, Alberta, Calgary — turned it into a marine research station.
A campus on the inlet
Seventy-five hectares and about three kilometres of waterfront where Grappler and Bamfield Inlets meet. Labs, vessels, courses spring through fall, researchers year-round.
Why visitors feel it
Even if you never set foot on campus, the Centre shapes the village — students in the harbour, science in the conversation, a coast that is studied as well as visited.
