The 1700 Cascadia Tsunami

On the evening of January 26, 1700, a magnitude-9 earthquake dropped this coast — and Japan wrote down the wave.

The orphan tsunami

Japanese harbour records describe a tsunami arriving with no local earthquake — an orphan wave. Centuries later, scientists matched it to the Cascadia subduction zone, off this coast, on the evening of January 26, 1700.

What it did here

The coastline dropped, forests drowned where they stood, villages were destroyed. Indigenous oral histories along the coast remember the ocean suddenly changing. Science and memory agree on the event.

Living with it

Bamfield sits on the same subduction zone. Tsunami signage, high-ground routes, and evacuation planning are part of coastal life — worth knowing, not worth fearing.
