Bamfield and the Shipwreck Coast
Fog, reefs, and winter storms made this coast famous for wrecks — and for the lighthouses and trails built to answer them.
Why here
The outer coast faces the open Pacific with no shelter: reefs, sudden fog, winter gales. Sailing ships and early steamers had charts. What they lacked was local knowledge.
The answers
Cape Beale, 1874. Pachena Point, 1908. The lifesaving trail between them. Every aid on this coast was bought with a wreck.
Slow down
This history is a reason to take Bamfield slowly. The coast is not scenery — it is the main character, and it keeps a record.
