Pachena Beach and the Trailhead
A great beach that also happens to be the start of the West Coast Trail — and a Huu-ay-aht campground.
Two beaches in one
For most visitors, Pachena is a beach day — wide sand, surf, room. For hikers, it is kilometre zero (or seventy-five) of the West Coast Trail.
On Huu-ay-aht land
The campground and much of the surrounding area are Huu-ay-aht. Camp by their rules, on their land, with respect.
Anchor a trip here
Beach in the morning, trailhead photo at noon, back to the cottage by evening. Pachena organizes a Bamfield stay around itself.
Timeline
- The deep place: Pachena sits in Huu-ay-aht territory, on an ancient coastline.
- The trailhead: The northern gateway of the West Coast Trail.
- Today: Beach days and thru-hikes, same sand.
