One narrow bridge explains the Skinny Cars.

The constraint

The old bridge to Pachena was narrow. Loads, vehicles, and routes all had to fit it — which is exactly why Bamfield built narrow cars.

Beach, forest, bridge

The Pachena run was path, sand, timber, and timing. The bridge was the pinch point that everything else obeyed.

What changed

The highway from Port Alberni was finished in October 2023, and getting to Bamfield stopped being a puzzle. The old bridge is a reminder of when it was one.
